Reflections on the AHPD New Heads Workshop

Our annual new heads workshop was led by Professor Christine Horrocks. Having a space to talk about the challenges of taking on the Head of Department role and share practice was appreciated by all.
This workshop was the single most useful piece of training that I have completed since becoming an academic. Christine was engaging, funny and approachable with lots of very useful words of advice. The session covered different models of leadership, current challenges in the sector, vision statements, department finance and strategic planning. Despite being well-established in academic senior leadership, Christine’s willingness to admit her own previous mistakes and misconceptions made me feel much more comfortable about embarking upon headship and I feel much more confident as a result. I would highly recommend this session to anyone who is about to, or has recently become the Head of a Psychology department.
